Tackwatch has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking of any kind. It collects nothing about you. The one thing that leaves your device is the patch of map you are looking at, because a forecast has to be fetched for somewhere.
What leaves your device
To draw a forecast, Tackwatch asks its own forecast server for data covering the area currently on screen. That request contains the latitude and longitude bounds of the visible map (or of a point you tap) and the model you have selected. It contains no identifier, no account, no device name and nothing else about you.
If you allow location access, the map opens centred on your position. In that case the area sent is an area around where you are, so an approximate position does leave the device. It is a map region rather than a precise fix, it is not stored by us, and it is not linked to any identity. We would rather say this plainly than bury it.
You can decline location access. The app works normally; it simply opens somewhere else, and you pan to where you want.
Who receives it
Tackwatch's forecast server, api.tackwatch.app, answers the request.
It runs the open-source Open-Meteo
API server on a machine we rent from DigitalOcean in San Francisco. Its logs record that a forecast
was requested, but not the area and not your IP address, and they are overwritten as they fill.
Cloudflare sits in front of that server. It carries every request, so it handles your device's IP address the way any network provider does, and it keeps copies of forecast responses for up to ten minutes so the same area can be answered again quickly. Cloudflare's handling is governed by its privacy policy.
Open-Meteo receives nothing from the app. The weather data itself comes from Open-Meteo's public archive of national weather service model output, which our server downloads on its own schedule. If any of this changes, this page will say so.
What stays on your device
Stored locally, and never transmitted anywhere:
- Your settings — units, which layers are shown, the selected model.
- The last map region, so the app opens where you left it.
- Cached and downloaded forecasts, so they are available offline.
All of it is removed when you delete the app. Downloaded areas can be removed individually from within the app at any time.
What we do not do
- No accounts, sign-in, or email collection.
- No advertising, no advertising identifier, no attribution or marketing SDKs.
- No analytics, crash reporting, or usage telemetry.
- No third-party trackers. The app contains no third-party code of that sort at all.
- No selling or sharing of data, because there is none to sell or share.
Children
Tackwatch is a weather tool for sailors and is not directed at children. It collects no personal information from anyone, of any age.
Your rights
Regulations such as the GDPR and CCPA give you rights to access, correct and delete personal data held about you. We hold none, so there is nothing to retrieve or erase on request. Data held on your own device is removed by deleting the app.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes — particularly any change to what leaves your device — will be called out in the app's release notes.
